The Ultimate Guide to Work Visas in Malaysia: Types and Requirements

Ultimate guide to work visas

Foreigners who wish to work in Malaysia can obtain a work visa through three types of passes: Employment Pass, Professional Visit Pass, and Residence Pass. The Employment Pass is for professional or managerial work, while the Professional Visit Pass is for short-term working visits. The Residence Pass is for top foreign talents in national key strategic sectors.

To obtain an Employment Pass, the applicant must earn a minimum salary, which varies depending on the category of the Employment Pass. The applicant must also hold a degree or diploma from a recognized university or a professional/competency certificate from a recognized professional institute. The Employment Pass can be obtained for a minimum period of one month and up to a maximum of five years.

A Professional Visit Pass is required for all foreign talent and skilled workforce visiting Malaysia to provide consultancy or services whereby they will not be salaried in Malaysia. The applicant’s salary cannot be paid in Malaysia. This pass is also required for foreigners to be involved in providing training or internship opportunities in Malaysia. It is valid for a maximum of 12 months.

A Residence Pass - Talent is a 10-year multiple entry visa which is employer-independent, targeting top foreign talents in national key strategic sectors. The holder will be allowed to stay and work in Malaysia for 10 years (with an option to renew). The holder’s spouse and children below 18 years old will also be given the Residence Pass. The spouse will also be able to work in Malaysia.
